The McKinley Hightower-Beyah Award
The The McKinley Hightower-Beyah Award was created in 2008 to commemorate and celebrate a dear friend of Just Food and his lifelong commitment to community service, education, urban agriculture, and social justice. Each year, this award honors New York City youth who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their community through their involvement in urban agriculture and food justice work.
Presented To: The Y.E.S. Planning Committee
The Y.E.S. (Youth Empowerment Summit) planning commitee are a phenomenal group of young people from a diverse set of organizations that worked tirelessly throughout 2015 to host two regional gatherings for youth involved in the food justice movement in and around NYC. Inspired by attending a regional summit hosted by East NY Farms! in 2014, the Y.E.S. planning committee came together to organize a follow up conference for youth, by youth. The two part series included the Northeast Regional Youth Food Justice Summit in May and the Youth Empowerment Summit in November of 2015. With topics ranging from Organizing 101 to Adultism, these events convened more than ninety youth to share their skills and knowledge with each other
Four food movement leaders will kick off the 2016 Just Food Conference with their inspiring stories of community action and change.
