Paula Segal is the founding director of 596 Acres, New York City's only community land access advocacy organization. 596 Acres has helped 37 groups become formal stewards of the commons through licenses and leases with municipal agencies and public authorities for use of formerly vacant public land; they are working with over 100 other groups around New York City working towards community control of land. Paula is an attorney admitted to practice in New York State and a partner in her own firm, Mohen & Segal. Mohen & Segal has saved two legacy gardens in NYC from disappearing due to tax lien foreclosure and is actively fighting to preserve others in the face of deed theft and speculation. She is the the inaugural Commons Fellow at the Fordham Urban Law Center.
